Athenian Riviera: Plans Announced for New Pedestrian-Bicycle Lane

Plans for the construction of a coastal pedestrian-bicycle lane that will cross most of the Athenian Riviera, from Kallithea to Voula, were recently announced by the Region of Attica.

Included in the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0”, the project has secured funding of 24.7 million euros and will be tendered by the Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) and implemented by the regional authority.

Earlier this month the Regional Governor of Attica, Giorgos Patoulis, signed a cooperation agreement with the HRADF for the start of the tendering procedures.

Dubbed “Athenian Riviera – Urban Walk”, the project involves the unification of the urban coastline of the Region of Attica, through a single pedestrian-bicycle path network that will extend from the Municipality of Kallithea to the City Hall of the Municipality of Vari – Voula – Vouliagmeni, crossing six Municipalities (Kallithea, P. Faliro, Alimos, Elliniko-Argyroupoli, Glyfada, Vari – Voula – Vouliagmeni). The estimated total length is 13,5 kilometers. The project is expected to be completed at the end of 2025.

According to the Region of Attica, the aim of the project is to upgrade public space for the benefit of pedestrians and cyclists.

“The intervention aims to improve the urban environment by upgrading the quality of the urban space and attracting new economic activities, while having a positive impact on the natural environment, creating new jobs and achieving significant energy savings that will serve the transition to a low-carbon economy,” the regional authority said.

Commenting on the project, Governor Patoulis said the “Athenian Riviera – Urban Walk” will contribute to the further upgrading of the coastal front of Attica.

“If we add the redevelopment projects of Faliro Bay implemented by the Region of Attica, the redevelopment in Hellinikon and other projects with a strong developmental mark, then we can talk about a coastal front that is radically changing and signals our will to move on to the next day of development and prosperity in the wider region,” he said.
