Air Travel Greece to Benefit from EU-Qatar Air Transport Deal by GTP editing team 5 October 2022 written by GTP editing team 5 October 2022 0 comments Share 0FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 25 Greek lawmakers approved an air travel agreement between Greece and Qatar which is part of a previous deal between the EU and Qatar, the Greek Transport Ministry announced this week. The deal aims to boost business activity and enhance air connectivity between Qatar and EU states. Signed last year in Luxembourg by the EU and Qatar, the agreement foresees an increase in the total number of weekly routes to EU member states as well as flexibility with regard to combination flights, serving intermediate points, intermediate stops, transit transportation and joint service of two or more points in EU member states. Commenting on the importance of the agreement, Alternate Transport Minister Michalis Papadopoulos said it contributed to stronger bilateral relations, which “especially in today’s critical moment of regional instability and energy crisis is a priority for Greece”. Papadopoulos said Greece had much to gain from the deal including advantages created as a result of competitive air services which will strengthen the sectors of tourism, culture and infrastructure, while at the same time ensuring a higher level of flight safety. The Greek minister pointed out that the agreement would also contribute to environmental protection through the joint formulation and implementation of international aviation policy. “It is vital we take urgent measures to combat climate change and to continue cooperation with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector in a manner consistent with international obligations, including those listed in the acts of the International Organization of Civil Aviation (DOPA),” he added. The EU-Qatar agreement provides a single set of rules, a level playing field with provisions for fair competition, and a platform for future cooperation on a wide range of aviation issues (safety, security, air traffic management).
