Tourism Minister, Vassilis Kikilas speaking at the Athens International Tourism Expo 2022.

Greece’s unprecedented tourism performance this year set the foundations for the upgrade of the tourism product and the extension of the season while attracting strategic investors, said Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias this week.

Addressing the Athens International Tourism Expo 2022, Kikilias said that Greece’s “success story” was appealing to international tourism and hospitality giants looking to invest and at the same time placing the country among the world’s most popular destinations.

“2022 has turned into an amazing year for tourism in Greece. We upgraded our tourism product, opened up to new markets, attracted higher income travelers, promoted new destinations and generated revenue that strengthened the national economy, local communities and supported the average Greek family,” Kikilias said.

Looking ahead, the minister said the main priority was to ensure that Greece moves away from the seasonal sea and sun model to an all-year-round destination brand. Athens, among others, was leading the way attracting travelers 12 months a year. The aim was other destinations in Greece to do the same.

Achieving the goal means putting all available funding tools to efficient use, Kikilias said, as well as moving ahead with targeted marketing campaigns, participation in international exhibitions and stronger domestic tourism activity.
