Marking World Wine Tourism Day on Sunday, Deputy Tourism Minister Sofia Zacharaki visited wineries in the Attica region which were open to visitors free of charge. Zacharaki’s tour of the region’s vineyards and wineries is part of the tourism ministry’s strategy to promote wine tourism and enhance the traveler experience. “On World Wine Tourism Day, we honor and highlight one of the most dynamic branches of the tourism sector. We continue the effort for a higher quality, more balanced and more sustainable Greek tourism product,” said Zacharaki. Among others, the minister had the chance to visit the Oenotria Land estate in Kapandriti, tour the Domaine Costa Lazaridi museum and sample wines, as well as the Markou Group winery in Peania, and the Nikolaou Estate in Koropi. Zacharaki said the ministry was taking actions to further develop and promote wine tourism. These include events at major wine-producing territories across Greece. She added that among others, that the ministry was working on a special wine platform and on introducing awards for top wineries. “The effort has begun to bear fruit as we now count more than 100 wineries with the Visitable Winery label, a record number for Greece. Our ambition is to strengthen this dynamic even more and to combine wine tourism with more thematic and alternative forms of tourism,” she said.
