Elafonisos, a tiny island south of the Peloponnese, is taking steps to attract remote workers through an initiative launched by the Global Hellenic Diaspora network and supported by the island’s municipality. The Global Hellenic Diaspora is a network of philhellenes and Greeks living abroad that includes more than 150,000 members. The initiative, which aims to offer people a destination where they can combine remote working with experiential tourism, includes the offer of travel packages with activities such as pilgrim tours, olive- and herb-picking, visiting the nearby 5,000-year-old Pavlopetri sunken city, exploring the island’s Simos cave and learning traditional dances. Elafonisos Mayor Efi Liarou welcomed the initiative, underlining that those who choose Elafonisos will get to experience all that the island has to offer and become involved with the local community while exercising their professional obligations. During their stay on the island, visitors can also become involved in the community either through their professional specialty, i.e., doctors, scientists or through their participation in voluntary programs like coastal cleaning. The initiative’s travel packages on offer were created by Upiria, a tour and activity website, and can be found online.
