Deputy Tourism Minister Sofia Zacharaki presented Greece’s proposals for the creation of an international task force for tourism which will be responsible for the sector’s redesign during the 117th session of the UNWTO Executive Council held in Marrakesh. Addressing the session, Zacharaki said Greek tourism had managed to reach pre-pandemic levels and emerge as “a champion in tourism recovery” despite the unprecedented challenges. She went on to underline the importance of actions that will take the sector into the new era and ensure its sustainable development through education, training, innovation and the use of digital technologies. On the sidelines of the executive council, Zacharaki met with Saudi Arabia’s General Director of International Affairs Sultan M AlMusallam with whom she discussed cooperation between the two countries, sustainable tourism practices and training as well as joint initiatives. “Despite the challenges, global tourism has recovered with Greek tourism emerging as a champion in this recovery being one of the few countries this year to achieve pre-pandemic revenues. During multiple crises in the last few years, Greece has demonstrated that it can overcome any obstacle,” said Zacharaki. The minister added that with “careful planning and cooperation with partners, domestic and international, Greece can and will reach even higher in the new year”. Last year, Greece was re-elected chair of the UNWTO Commission for Europe (CEU) for the 2021-2023 period.
