Eurobarometer: Cost of Living Top Concern for Greeks

The increasing cost of living and the imminent rises in food and energy prices is the leading concern for 100 percent of Greeks compared to 93 percent of Europeans, according to the latest Eurobarometer survey released this week.

The European Parliament’s Autumn 2022 Eurobarometer Survey findings reveal that only 20 percent of the Greeks said they were satisfied with the measures taken by their government and 19 percent by the EU to ease the cost of living crisis compared to 33 percent in the EU.

 Another main issue for 97 percent of the Greeks surveyed compared to 82 percent in the EU is fear of poverty and social exclusion as a result of the crisis.

Climate change has also become a key concern for 84 percent of Greeks surveyed (81 percent EU). The spread of the Russia-Ukraine war to other countries worries Greeks less than their EU counterparts at 78 percent (81 percent, EU). A total of 73 percent of Greeks (74 percent, EU ) see risk of a nuclear incident, while 86 percent compared to 70 percent in the EU expressed worries about migration.

According to the barometer, the spread of infectious diseases like Covid 2019 is a concern for 73 percent of Greeks – higher than 62 percent of other EU citizens.

Overall in the EU, according to barometer data, the cost of living and soaring prices in food and energy concern more than seven in 10 respondents, with peak results in Mediterranean countries, including Greece (100 percent), Cyprus (99 percent), Italy and Portugal (both 98 percent). The threat of poverty and social exclusion and climate change were also top concerns for the majority of EU residents.
