Greek construction firm Intrakat will undertake the upgrade and modernization of Paros Airport in a concession deal valued at 33 million euros, the Greek Infrastructure Ministry announced this week.

The highly anticipated project is aimed at improving airport services for the increasing number of flights and arrivals to Paros, facilitating tourism to the Cyclades island.

Revamp works include the construction of a new, fully equipped airport building and control tower, IT facilities covering passenger traffic management and services, the two-way extension of the existing landing/takeoff runway, the creation of safety zones, lighting and signals, and the extension of airport aprons.

Under the agreement, Intrakat will also remodel the area surrounding the new airport terminal, which will include the creation of car and bus parking areas, pedestrian walkways, green spaces, and lighting projects as well as connecting the airport to the island’s main road network.

Other projects include the construction of a new fire service and the expansion the airport’s biological wastewater treatment facility.

The current airport constructed by Intrakat and operating since 2016 handled 176,000 passengers in the summer of 2022.

In 2020, Paros authorities announced that they had secured over 43 million euros in funding for upgrade works to be allocated by the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSFR) known as ESPA. In 2021, municipal authorities announced plans to establish the airport into an international gateway for travelers from Schengen and non-Schengen countries including Israel.

Intrakat Group has undertaken large-scale airport upgrade projects as an EPC contractor for Fraport Greece’s 14 regional airports over the 2017-2021 period.
