Photo source: Visit Greece. Destinations in Greece are in high demand among Austrian travelers for the upcoming summer period, says the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) branch in Austria. More specifically, according to the local Ruefa Reisekompass 2023 report, Greece currently accounts for a 21 percent share of Austrians’ bookings for the holidays followed by Spain (9 percent), Turkey (9 percent), and Italy (7 percent). In the meantime, to meet the demand, Austrian Airlines said it will be launching direct flights to 21 destinations in Greece, including Athens, Thessaloniki, Kavala, Volos, Skiathos, Skyros, Preveza, Corfu, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Araxos, Kalamata, Rhodes, Kos, Karpathos, Samos, Limnos, Mykonos, Santorini, Heraklion and Chania. Tourist traffic to Greece from Austria in the January-November 2022 period increased by 13.94 percent compared to pre-Covid 2019, according to Austria’s national statistical service. Reisekompass findings reveal that: – 89 percent of Austrians are planning to travel in Austria and abroad this year; – 16 percent plan to extend their vacation into the low tourist season; – the majority wishes to travel at least twice this year with a minimum budget of 1,700 euros per person, up by 150 euros compared to 2022; – around 75 percent said they plan to holiday somewhere Europe; – the average vacation duration is 18 days, 11 of which are in the summer; and – sea and sun holidays are still the main choice, followed by city breaks, wellness tourism, active holidays and educational trips. Greece together with Italy, Croatia, Germany and Spain are the countries that Austrians wish to visit this year.
