The Greek Shipping Podcast by Kyvernitis Travel Group – Episode 10: Dr. George D. Pateras

Kyvernitis Travel Group has launched “The Greek Shipping Podcast” series, an initiative designed to “give voice” to the people of shipping and convey stories of shipping, seamanship and the sea to its listeners.
The monthly podcast was created out of Kyvernitis’ love for travel and Greek shipping.

Episode 10

The tenth episode of the “The Greek Shipping Podcast” is online and features George D. Pateras of the Pateras family that has over 200 years of maritime tradition and contribution to Greek shipping.

A few words about George D. Pateras and his interview

Born in London, UK, George D. Pateras, is the Deputy Chairman of Contships Management Inc. and since 2016 the President to the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping.

This podcast took place in “Aplotaria”, the main commercial street of the Greek island of Chios, in a very casual conversation amongst the bustling local market. The conversation with Mr Pateras is a journey through time and homage to all the significant points that contributed to the success of Greek Shipping.

The interview with Mr Pateras is surely is worth listening to because it signifies his acknowledgment of Greek sailors; the important role of women who supported Greek Shipping as wives and mothers; the need to impart the knowledge and the advantages of the maritime profession to the new generations; and, of course, the very simple belief: that the “Greek Miracle” is the result of the immense love for shipping and the ability of Greek shipowners to know the full range of a ship’s operations, enabling them to make impromptu decisions.

With studies in Engineering and Economics, Mr Pateras holds a BSc in Marine Engineering from Newcastle University, MS in Marine Engineering & Naval Architecture from MIT, as well as a PhD from Plymouth University.
He is a board member of the Hellenic War Risks Association & the Bahamas Shipowners Association, Chairman of the Hellenic Shipping War Risks Insurance S.A., and permanent advisor (AMSCC) of the Hellenic Ministry of Defense.
The Pateras family has been involved in the ownership, chartering and management of ships since 1870.
