Occupancy levels at Athens hotels reached 69.1 percent in 2022 up from 54.0 percent in 2021 but still down by 10.7 percent over pre-Covid 2019 (77.4 percent), said the Athens – Attica & Argosaronic Hotel Association on Thursday. Hotel performance turned positive in December last year with occupancy levels up by 7.9 percent at 56.2 percent compared to 36.5 percent a year earlier and 52.1 percent in 2019, according to the association’s “Overall Performance of the Attica Hotel Industry” bulletin. According to data released by the association in collaboration with GBR Consulting, overall performance for 2022 was still low compared to 2019 with occupancy rates in the negative for most of the year. Indicatively, occupancy levels in January and February last year were down by 46.9 percent and 41.7 percent respectively, compared to the same months in 2019 turning positive for the first time in October by 0.4 percent and then again in December. Source: GBR Consulting Compared to other European cities of the same size, Athens continued to record lower average room rates (ADR) and revenue per available room (RevPAR), which did not exceed 83.95 euros compared to 82.20 euros in 2019 and 51.49 percent in 2021 up by 63.1 percent. Hoteliers say the 2.1 percent rise (compared to 2019) is small in view of inflationary pressures and rising operating costs. Meanwhile, the average daily rate (ADR) in Athens in 2022 was up by 14.4 percent over pre-Covid 2019 to 121.45 euros compared to 106.20 euros in 2019 and 95.35 percent in 2021 and despite significant increases marked in rival cities.
