Rhodes Once Again Ranks Among Top 5 Most Sustainable Holiday Destinations

The Greek island of Rhodes has once again been ranked as one of the top 5 most sustainable holiday destinations in the world in the latest study by DiscoverCars.com.

The study evaluated 20 of the most popular tourism destinations by analyzing various sustainability factors such as carbon emissions, air quality, availability of electric vehicle charging stations, and the number of vegan restaurants and nature spots.

In the latest ranking, Rhodes came in at fifth place, with a score of 72 out of 100 points. The island scored fairly well for its carbon impact, with a round-trip flight from Heathrow Airport producing 1,493 kg of CO2.

Additionally, the island has one of the highest numbers of nature spots, with 77 available to explore, and boasts the second highest percentage of vegan restaurants in the top 10 list, with 34.19 percent of its culinary outlets offering vegan options to visitors.

Currently, the island has no hotels offering charging stations for electric vehicles out of the 1,365 available.

Last year’s ranking saw Rhodes topping the list, with a score of 67 points.

Theis year the ranking order has changed slightly, with Majorca, Spain taking the top spot, followed by Ibiza, Spain, Charleston, South Carolina, USA, and Dubrovnik, Croatia in second, third and fourth place, respectively.

Furthermore, 2023’s  list of the most sustainable holiday destinations in the world saw Santorini drop 6 positions, compared to last year, finishing 10th overall.

With a total score of 67 out of a 100, Santorini saw its nature spots increase to 35 in 2023’s list, yet, along Rhodes, they are the only destinations in the top 10 with no hotels offering charging stations for electric vehicles.

DiscoverCars.com’s research methodology used data retrieved by atmosfair, regarding CO2 emissions, The Weather Channel, when it came to air quality ranking, and Tripadvisor for statistics related to nature spots, vegan restaurants, and hotels.
