Thessaloniki’s new seafront area, known as Nea Paralia, will undergo an extensive refurbishment project that will include maintenance and upgrade works, according to an announcement by the northern Greek city’s municipality. The refurbishment project, which will cover all aspects of the new seafront’s maintenance and upgrade, will include works concerning damaged lighting infrastructure and restoration of its fountains and green areas, among others. Signing the two-year municipal public works contract, Thessaloniki Mayor Konstantinos Zervas said that the new waterfront’s maintenance project was a priority since the beginning of his term. According to the mayor, once the works are complete, the new seafront will add value to an area considered “a jewel of the city, a place that attracts both residents and visitors”. The contract covers an area of approximately 16 acres, with hundreds of new tree plantings planned, as well as the potting of thousands of bushes and plants. In addition, the project includes extensive interventions for the repair of fountains at the Alexander the Great monument area – considered the starting point of the new seafront area – and the Zogolopoulos Umbrellas sculpture. The project will also see a renovation of all electromechanical facilities across the front which ends at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall area. “During the works, the municipality will be there to supervise and make sure everything goes according to plan,” added Zervas. The refurbishment projects comes after months of litigation and 10 years since the opening of the renovated area that includes 13 parks, an open air auditorium and has become a meeting point as well as a wellness and recreation landmark for locals and guests.
