Greece and Mexico Strengthen Cultural and Regional Ties for Future Collaborations

Greek ministerial and regional authorities recently met in Athens with officials from Mexico to explore future collaborations in the fields of culture, innovation, business and green tourism.

Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni reaffirmed the strong cultural ties between the two countries during a meeting at the Culture Ministry with a delegation of the Mexico – Greece Parliamentary Friendship Group.

Mendoni updated the delegation on her participation at last year’s UNESCO – Mondiacult 2022 in Mexico as well as on the content of the updated Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) she signed with her Mexican counterpart Alejandra Frausto Guerrero.

“Besides our common cultural interests, our countries have systematically fallen victims of culture goods trafficking,” she said, adding that Mexico supports Greece’s pledge for the reunification of the Parthenon marbles.

On that note, the minister underlined the need to strengthen the collaboration against illicit cultural trade and create an exchange program in fields like gastronomy, cinema, literature and handicrafts.

Mexico – Greece Parliamentary Friendship Group President Mario Alberto Rodriguez Carrillo and Vice President Susana Prieto Terrazas agreed with Mendoni and suggested the organization of an annual mutual festival highlighting the best aspects of both cultures.

In the context of EU’s International Urban Cooperation program (IUC), which aims to develop a form of decentralized international urban and regional cooperation in the fields of sustainable urban development and innovation, a delegation of the Colima Region in Mexico met with Attica Region Governor Giorgos Patoulis.

Patoulis welcomed the Colima local government representatives underlining that under the IUC “Attica can strengthen its collaborations worldwide in the fields of innovation, sustainable development and green tourism”.

The collaboration between the two regions will see Attica offering its expertise and discuss best practices with one of Mexico’s biggest regions.

The Colima delegation also visited the Innovation Center of Attica Region (ICAR) and the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI).
