Athens International Airport (AIA) was first among Europe’s top 3 airports singled out for punctuality of arrivals and departures for the third week of February, according to Eurocontrol. More specifically, based on data Eurocontrol’s European Aviation Overview, AIA is ranked in first spot based on the punctuality of departures and arrivals for the February 16-22 period, recording 90 percent punctuality for arrivals and 89 percent for departures. Overall, based on the same data, punctuality levels are still below 2019. A previous Eurocontrol report found that Greek airports were among the best performing in 2022 despite the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, the pandemic, and continuing flight delays at airports across Europe. Meanwhile, overall in Europe for the February 16-22 period this year, data reveals an 87 percent increase in daily flights to 23,366 on average compared to 2019 levels and a 22 percent rise in intra-European traffic compared to the same week in 2022 but still down by 13 percent over 2019. The busiest airlines based on number of flights per day for the period under review were: Ryanair with 2,180 flights, Turkish Airlines (1,329 flights), easyJet (1.285 flights), Air France Group (936 flights), and Lufthansa Airlines (873 flights). According to the report for the same week, the busiest airports based on average flights per day were those of: Istanbul (1,283 flights, departures and arrivals), London Heathrow (1,184 flights), Paris CDG (1,131 flights), Amsterdam (1,077 flights), and Madrid Barajas (1,011 flights).
