The first “Park for All” in Thessaloniki is set to open to the public during the summer of 2023 in the Toumba area, according to an announcement by the city’s authorities. The city’s mayor, Konstantinos Zervas, recently inspected the park’s construction works progress and said the area will soon have “a well-deserved inclusive new green space for all”. The “Park for All” is being built in the area between Grigoriou Lambraki, Pafsilipou and Olympia streets and is designed as an urban space that provides equal access to everyone, including people with disabilities. More specifically, the park will have a special activity area for people with disabilities and will be part of a wider network of free public spaces within Thessaloniki. Additionally, it will act as a central meeting point that is directly connected to central operations in the wider area. Organized as a recreation space located within a short distance from a number of primary and secondary schools, the park aims, overall, to improve the quality of life for children and adults with disabilities, and their families. According to the city’s Deputy Mayor of Technical Works and Sustainable Mobility Efraim Kyrizidis the park’s infrastructure and network works are complete and the configuration of the space will begin soon. According to the local authorities, the “Park for All” project is an important step towards creating a significant open space that prioritizes equal access for all citizens and visitors of Thessaloniki. The new green area is expected to provide a much-needed area for relaxation and recreation in the city and serve as an example of how urban areas can be developed to ensure the inclusion of all members of the community.
