The port of Rafina.

The port of Rafina, Attica’s second largest, is soon to be upgraded in order to safely meet the increasing demands of coastal shipping and cruise travel, said Attica Region Governor Giorgos Patoulis recently.

The modernization and expansion of port facilities budgeted at 500,000 euros will be covered by the Attica Region under an agreement signed this week with the Rafina Port Authority (RPA).

“The project will further highlight the key role of the Port of Rafina for the development of the wider region and of Attica as a whole serving as one of the main gateways for tourists to the mainland and to our islands,” said Patoulis.

The modernization of Rafina port comes as part of a series of investments aimed at redeveloping Attica. Patoulis went on to add that the aim is to make Rafina a hub of development for Eastern Attica, with the implementation of wide range of projects set to improve the standard of living in the area.

Relevant tenders will be announced by the Attica Region and will be implemented by the Eastern Attica Directorate of Technical Works.

Earlier this year, a master plan for the development of Rafina port was approved by the Greek Shipping Ministry’s Port Planning and Development Committee.

According to the RPA, the port handled 1.7 million passengers last year and generated over 3 million euros in revenues.
