The city of Karditsa in Thessaly will see an expanded cycling path network following the recent approval of the Thessaly Region. The 440,000-euro project will see the construction of a new 2.5 kilometers bike lane starting at the intersection of Sarantaporou and Dimitriou Lappa streets. Created throughout the entire length of Dimitriou Lappa Street, the lane will continue on Alexandrou Panagouli Street and connect with the existing cycling path on Ypsilantou Street. Dimitriou Lappa Street will host a one way red-colored bike lane, 1.5 meters in width. Thessaly Region Governor Kostas Agorastos with Karditsa Mayor Vasileios Tsiakos. Photo source: Thessaly Region. The Alexandros Panagoulis Street cycling path will offer two directions and for most of its part will be located on the sidewalk. It will be 2.5 meters in width, distinctively separated from the car lane with a 0.7-meter safety zone, offering a remaining walkway width of 1.6 meters for pedestrians. The project, which will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and improve accessibility in Karditsa’s city center, will also include works that will lower sidewalks to street level at all walkway corners so that traffic safety is ensured for all cyclists and pedestrians. The new cycling path will include glass studs for improved road visibility and strips of cycle lane separators that will have their own solar light reflectors. Photo Source: Municipality of Karditsa. Thessaly Region Governor Kostas Agorastos, who granted approval for the 440,000 euros project said that the new bike lane aims to upgrade Karditsa’s city center. According to the governor, the project is part of the region’s strategic plan to promote sustainable ‘green’ mobility everywhere in Thessaly, the “Greek region with the largest network of cycling paths in the country”. The expansion of Karditsa’s bike lane network, which will be carried out by the Karditsa Municipality and funded by the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) “Thessaly 2014-2020” program, is expected to make the city more environmentally friendly and also provide a safe and healthy mode of transportation for locals and visitors.
