This will be the first train service from Athens to Thessaloniki after the head-on collision of two trains in Tempi, Central Greece, which killed 57 people on February 28. That accident was on the same route. According to planning, one two-way route will be running in the first phase of operations, two starting on April 7, and three two-way routes as of April 11. OSE stated: “Given the planning of the organization for the safe re-operation of the railway in the immediate future the implementation of additional routes will begin according to the following planning:” – April 3: Athens – Kalabaka – Athens (the first 882/887 route) – April 3: Athens – Thessaloniki – Athens (first intercity route) – April 7: addition of second Athens – Thessaloniki – Athens route / Athens suburban train on Piraeus – Magoula – Piraeus and Athens – Lianokladi – Athens routes – April 11: addition of third Athens – Thessaloniki – Athens route OSE said additional routes to Larisa – Volos / Paleofarsalo – Kalabaka and Thessaloniki – Larissa will be announced in the week after. Currently running train itineraries Suburban train. Greek train itineraries currently running: – Piraeus – Athens – Athens International Airport – Ano Liosia – Athens International Airport – Ano Liosia – Kantza – Athens – Halkida – Suburban (proastiakos) Patras train – Olympia – Pyrgos – Katakolo – Diakofto – Kalavryta – Iconio – Thriassio – Thessaloniki – Idomeni (freight train) – Thessaloniki – Strymonas – Promachonas (freight train) – Alexandroupolis – Ormenio (freight train). “We are working on the full restoration of routes across the rail network with safety and passenger service in mind,” said OSE in its announcement. The first intercity and suburban train services in Greece resumed on March 22 with an updated set of safety measures.
