Holders of a Disability Card will be able to gain free access to museums and archaeological sites in Greece, the Greek Culture Ministry announced this week.

The decision comes as part of Greek government actions to ensure equal access to culture and labor and create an inclusive society. Users can scan their card and be admitted for free together with their companions or caretakers (where applicable) to museums and sites.

The card was created with the help of the National Confederation of Persons with Disabilities (ESAMEA).

“The Digital Disability Card gives people with disabilities and their companions the right to gain access to cultural sites with dignity, without the need for onsite certification of their disability and free access to archaeological sites and museums,” said Culture Minister Lina Mendoni.

Mendoni went on to underline that “universal access to cultural goods is an absolute priority and a right”. The minister said the Disability Card facilitates the daily life of people with disabilities and ensure access to culture.

“It is a necessary service that functions as a form of identification and as proof of disability and ensures access,” said Deputy Labor Minister Domna Michailidou, adding that the Greek government was implementing policies aimed at equal access and integration of people with disabilities into society, culture and the labor market.

It should be noted that foreigners visiting Greece are advised to present proof of identification (ID or passport) and official documentation of disability to be allowed free access to Greek sites and museums.

People with disability can apply for an EU Disability Card or SID-EU card here.

I am an American citizen who will be visiting Greece for 3 weeks. What do I need to bring as proof of my disability. I wear oxygen and have a us handicapped placard for my car. Is a picture of my placard as well as my oxygen strapped to me good enough?

Barbara,
Did you ever get a response to this question? My husband is 100% disabled through the VA and has a placard as well.
Thanks
