A quartet of German high school students in late March enjoyed an educational trip to Athens courtesy of the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO).

The trip was organized through a competition of the Greek Embassy in Germany for schools that teach ancient Greek. Running since 2019, the competition aims to promote the teaching of ancient Greek in German schools.

This year’s winning team consisted of four 10th grade students from Wirsberg High School in Würzburg. The students won the trip after creating a video called “Mission: Auf nach Troja” for the “200 years of Henry Schliemann – Schliemann in Homer’s footsteps” 2022 competition.

Before departing for Greece, the students met with Ambassador Mara Marinaki at the Greek Embassy in Berlin and took a tour of a Schliemann-themed exhibition at the Museum of Prehistory and Early History.

During their stay in Athens, the students had the chance to explore Greek culture, history, mythology and experience the local cuisine and hospitality.

Accompanied by two teachers, the students toured the city’s historical center, the Acropolis and its museum, the National Archaeological Museum, the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center, and the Argosaronic islands.

According to the GNTO, the educational trip provided the students with a unique opportunity to expand their knowledge and appreciation of Greek culture, and to deepen their understanding of the language and its rich history.

“The organization is committed to supporting initiatives that promote cultural exchange and education and is proud to have played a role in this rewarding experience for the German students,” the GNTO said in an announcement.
