The Acropolis Museum, one of the most popular museums in Athens and across Greece, will open its doors with free admission on two special occasions this month.

Firstly, on Saturday May 13, the museum is participating in this year’s European Night of Museums. The museum will have extended opening hours from 9 a.m. until midnight, and free entry from 8 p.m. onwards. This provides visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the museum’s collections by night, including some of the most exquisite masterpieces.

The museum’s restaurant will also be open during the same hours, so visitors can take a break and enjoy a bite to eat.

During the morning hours on Saturday, visitors can also participate in the gallery talk “Saturday in the Museum with 20+1 masterpieces.” This guided tour takes visitors through the museum’s exhibition areas and brings to life myths and fables, folklores and traditions, historical milestones and human stories that are represented in art.

The gallery talk will be offered in English at 10:30 a.m. and in Greek at 12:30 p.m. Participation requires a museum general admission ticket, and visitors can make a reservation on the museum’s website.

International Museum Day

The celebrations continue on Thursday, May 18, when the museum marks International Museum Day. On this day, the museum offers free entry to all visitors from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The theme for this year’s event is “Museums, Sustainability, and Well-being,” and the focus is on the role of museums as places of entertainment, creativity, and socialization for children.

The museum invites families to visit the Kid’s Corner on the second floor, where they can enjoy fun digital games and videos that bring ancient myths to life, telling wonderful stories and revealing the daily lives of the ancient Athenians.

In addition, families can pick up one of the four family trails – leaflets designed for children and parents – from the Information Desk and learn about the museum exhibits in a fun and creative way. Also, families can purchase the new educational booklet “Ancient Professions at the Acropolis Museum” from the museum shops and discover artifacts that transport them to different workplaces of the ancient Athenians.

These events provide a great opportunity to explore the Acropolis Museum’s fascinating collections and learn about ancient Greek culture and history.
