Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis pledged that hundreds of infrastructure projects valued at 1.9 billion euros were in the pipeline for the North Aegean Region during his recent visit. Mitsotakis presented a wide range of works – 340 in total – which focus on networks and infrastructure for improvement of connectivity and safety, upgrading of the quality of life of citizens, attracting and implementing investments that add more value to the region, and supporting the primary sector and the green transition, during his visit to Lesvos. Some of the key projects named by the Greek prime minister ahead of elections on May 21 include the upgrade of main island roads on Lesvos and Samos, port upgrades on Lesvos and Ikaria, airport modernization on Lesvos, Samos, Chios and Ikaria, and improved waste and water management systems. Additionally, Mitsotakis announced funding for refugee hospitality centers and related activities, school infrastructure and teacher placement, health and farming as well as the creation of new jobs. Private investments being implemented or in the pipeline under the government’s development law include private investments amounting to 125.3 million euros of which 0.3 million euros are set to go into the primary sector, 9.1 million euros into manufacturing, 110.7 million euros into tourism and 5.2 million euros into services. Deputy Tourism Minister Sofia Zacharaki, who accompanied Mitsotakis to Lesvos, said the ministry had allocated 4 million euros to promote the North Aegean islands and added that the time had come for the islands impacted by the refugee crisis to look forward to a brighter future.
