According to Managing Consultant for GBR Consulting Stefan Merkenhof who presented the findings during an event at the at the Electra Palace, Thessaloniki is a top choice by travelers who also recommend the Greek city to friends and relatives upon return. Citing the data for 2022, Merkenhof said tourists rated Thessaloniki with an overall score of 7.9, which is low compared to previous years. At the same time however, 97 percent of those polled said they would recommend the city to others while 95 percent said they wish to return. Based on booking data for the first four months of 2023, Merkenhof said indications were “encouraging” but there was still a very large difference with relevant data from Athens. Speaking during the event, THA President Andreas Mandrinos referred to the challenges ahead which include ensuring air connectivity from international destinations, linking the city’s airport with the metro, which is currently under construction, and facilitating the viability of 1- and 2-star hotels. Other issues which require immediate attention include parking, noise pollution and cleanliness. Photo source: THA. He went on to add that despite the setbacks, Thessaloniki continues to be a very popular destination which makes it imperative for the local government and stakeholders to formulate a targeted strategic plan for the city’s tourism development. Greece’s second largest city, Thessaloniki has been struggling over the last few years to attract and keep travelers in town.
