In efforts to improve the passenger drop-off and pick-up experience and in view of the expected increase in international traveler arrivals, Athens International Airport (AIA) announced that it would be putting into effect new curbside access and traffic rules starting on June 7. The regulations aim to ensure safety and the orderly and responsible use of road sections exclusively intended for passenger pick-up/drop-off at AIA’s arrivals and departures areas. Under the new system, all users will have 10 minutes free of charge for pick-up or drop-off. Additionally the rules aim to put a stop to illegal parking and the resultant congestion and to facilitate both travelers and drivers. Photo source: Athens International Airport. Airport authorities said the improvement of airport curbside operations are necessary in view of the capacity needs and the airport’s passenger traffic, which has already exceeded record pre-Covid 2019 levels. Changes to Curbside pick-up/drop-off at AIA: -the airport has a new entry/exit barrier-controlled system at departures and arrivals areas, allowing 10 minutes for vehicles to drive, stop and exit free of charge -vehicle service and flow will be facilitated through traffic regulation and short stop activity in specially designated areas, preventing illegal parking and prolonged stay Photo source: Athens International Airport. -drivers who stay for more than 10 minutes and up to 20 minutes will be charged with 5 euros, which will increase by 1 euro for every minute after that up to an hour -special provisions apply to persons with reduced mobility (PRMs) –free parking for 20 minutes will continue to apply for all users at AIA’s short-term parking areas, P1 and P2. “Athens International Airport seeks the quick adjustment of drivers to a more functional, orderly and fair use of the premises. Sums that may be collected from non-compliance, will be donated by AIA for the planning, support and implementation of road safety programs conducted by the Panos Mylonas Road Safety Institute,” the airport said in a statement.
