The new signs have been placed throughout Chania and features directions and information to six of the city’s areas of interest including the Venetian Harbor, the Archaeological Museum and the Municipal Garden. Each sign displays the name of the point of interest in both Greek and English and also offers pedestrians valuable information (distance in kilometers/time it takes to reach each location on foot). According to the municipality, the aim of the initiative is to promote the city’s noteworthy attractions. “With these new signs serving as reliable guides, tourists in Chania can now navigate the city easily to explore its rich history, vibrant culture, and picturesque landscapes,” the municipality said in an announcement. Additional signs will soon be installed at each point of interest, featuring brief descriptions in Greek and English. Furthermore, signs highlighting thematic routes and the overall network of routes in the old town of Chania will also be installed. “We are delighted to introduce these new signs, which will greatly benefit our visitors exploring Chania. By providing them with accurate walking distances and travel times, we hope to enhance their overall experience in our city,” said Chania Mayor Panagiotis Simantirakis. The project is part of the Chania Municipality Sustainable Urban Development Strategy, known as “Revitalizing the Core for Development – RECODE.” The initiative, fully funded by the Crete 2014-2020 regional funding program, has a total budget of 154,960.90 euros. The signs were installed by the municipality’s Technical Services Department, Planning & Information Technology Department, and Tourism Department.
