The Greek island of Corfu in the Ionian has been chosen as the backdrop for the upcoming film “The Return“, featuring acclaimed actors Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche.

Directed by Uberto Pasolini, the movie delves into the timeless tale of Odysseus’ journey home, marking the first international production centered on the Odyssey in several decades.

Renowned actor Ralph Fiennes takes on the iconic role of Odysseus, while Juliette Binoche breathes life into the character of Penelope. Joining them is Greek actor Nikitas Tsakiroglou, portraying Laertes. The film showcases Corfu’s carefully selected and impressive locations, which add a layer of authenticity to the narrative.

Assisting with the production are the Ionian Islands Film Office of the Ionian Islands Region, the Municipalities of North Corfu and Central Corfu, and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Corfu. Collaborators, technicians, and supporting actors from Corfu are actively participating in the filming process.

The Greek production company Heretic, whose past achievements include winning a Palme d’Or award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022, has taken on the responsibility of co-producing “The Return.”

The shooting in Corfu is expected to wrap up by the end of the month with the film crew making the most of the island’s landscapes and cultural heritage. The movie aims to bring the ancient epic to life while infusing it with a contemporary perspective, allowing audiences to embark on a captivating cinematic journey.

“The Return” reunites Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche more than 25 years after their memorable collaboration in the Oscar-winning film “The English Patient.” This highly anticipated project also features Charlie Plummer, known for his role in “Lean on Pete,” as Telemachus, the son of Odysseus and Penelope.

Directed by Uberto Pasolini, known for his work on “Nowhere Special” and as a producer for “The Full Monty,” the film boasts a screenplay co-written by Edward Bond and John Collee. Bond, known for his contributions to films like “Blow-Up” and “Walkabout,” and Collee, acclaimed for his work on “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World,” add their creative touch to the script.

“The Return” will continue shooting on locations in the Peloponnese and Italy.
