The Thessaloniki Archaeological Museum recently launched a new mobile app that gives visitors the chance to explore the history of Thessaloniki and Central Macedonia in a unique way.

The new “Museum on the Go” app offers a digital tour guide experience, bringing the museum’s exhibits and the archaeological sites where they were discovered to life.

Available as a free download for Android and iOS devices, the app takes users on a virtual journey through time and features 400 stories and showcasing 250 objects from the museum’s collection.

“Museum on the Go” supports 12 audio guide languages – including Greek, Bulgarian, Chinese, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish and Turkish – making it accessible to visitors from around the world.

Inside the museum, the app offers detailed information on 150 exhibits, presented in both text (Greek and English) and audio formats. By utilizing a network of beacons equipped with Bluetooth technology throughout the museum’s halls, the app allows user location tracking and alerts museum guests about nearby exhibits.

Visitors can choose their own tour route or follow guided thematic tours of suggested durations, such as “An Hour in the Museum” and “Alexander the Great and Macedonian Aristocracy.” Additionally, tactile tours are available for visually impaired individuals.

Beyond the museum’s walls, the app provides information on archaeological sites of interest in Thessaloniki and the surrounding area. Over 80 important archaeological sites, along with 250 finds from the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, have been digitally mapped and geographically grouped.

Upon registering on the app, users can earn points and receive gifts based on their discoveries within the museum. This gamified element adds an engaging and enjoyable aspect to the tour.

The “Museum on the Go” app was created in collaboration with technology companies Arx.Net and Hypertech S.A. It features optimal design techniques and user-friendly navigation, making archaeological knowledge accessible to residents, visitors, young and old, locals, and foreigners alike.

With approximately 5,000 users from 40 countries already using the app, significant interest has been generated. Notably, users from Germany, England, and France have shown great engagement with the app.

With “Museum on the Go,” the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki aims to revolutionize the way visitors engage with ancient history and artifacts. By seamlessly integrating digital technology with traditional exhibits, the museum seeks to enhance the overall experience and encourage further exploration of the region’s rich archaeological heritage.
