Ferry Travel in Greece Among the Costliest in Europe

The cost of traveling by ferry boat in Greece is among the highest in Europe, according to a study released this week by transportation matching website Vivanoda.

More specifically, according to the study which assessed more than 110,000 ferry ticket prices, Greece is the eleventh most expensive country in Europe to travel by ferry with domestic ticket prices selling for an average 59.48 euros per person per 100km.

Turkey is first on the list with 163.39 euros per 100km per person followed by the UK (105.10 euros) and Morocco (104.42 euros).

Ferry links between Greece and Turkey and between Morocco and Spain are proportionally the most expensive in Europe. Prices for connections between Greece and Turkey go for an average 210.86 euros per passenger per 100km. Patras from Venice and Ancona are the cheapest ferry routes in the country.

The cheapest were ferry crossings to Tunisia, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Sweden.

Additionally, ferry crossings to Turkey, the UK and Morocco have the highest price indices while connections between Germany and Lithuania or Latvia are the least expensive in relation to the distance traveled.

The study concluded that overall, the shorter the crossing, the more expensive it is and throughout Europe, prices are higher on average from July to September and on the weekends. In Greece, ferry prices tend to be much lower from November onwards but many ferry services are stop for the winter period.

Indicatively,  Italy is the sixth most expensive country in Europe to travel by ferry: the Italy – Malta route costs on average 99.99 euros while the Italy – France route comes to 76.99 euros. At 28th spot on the list, the Greece – Italy route goes for an average 23.53 euros.

Naming Sweden as one of the cheapest countries obviously means you have not looked at the costs between the Swedish mainland and the biggest island Gotland…
