The Region of Central Greece recently submitted a proposal to the Greek Environment Ministry for the creation of a network of paths and walking routes.

The proposal comes in response to the ministry’s invitation earlier this year.

The project, named “Network of Paths and Walking Routes of the Central Greece Region“, aims to map and highlight suitable hiking routes, taking into consideration the existing network of paths and walking routes in Central Greece.

The project will connect new and existing routes and paths to establish a unified national network. Moreover, environmentally friendly materials will be used to construct or revamp stopover areas.

Currently, the project is budgeted at 1.9 million euros and can be financed through the Recovery and Resilience Fund, specifically its action plan focusing on protecting biodiversity as a driver of sustainable development.

The National Trail Networks consist of medium-distance routes, most of which are extensions of international networks that extend in various directions and regions. These networks cover larger geographical areas within the country, based on the natural environment and the distribution of sites of special interest.

“Central Greece is home to numerous wonderful routes in nature, as well as historical trails, which we can and must showcase. While individual efforts have been made in the past, it is now time for a comprehensive intervention that includes this project and secures the necessary funding,” said Fanis Spanos, Regional Governor of Central Greece.

I hope you consult E O S who know their regions and mountains. The existing monopati and kalderimi were superbly made but suffer neglect from nature and careless users. The clubs should organize voluntary help as in Britain.
