The routes are 2.3 and 5.1 kilometers long, respectively, and are both circular, around Agios Panteleimon Monastery in Penteli. The project was funded by the NSRF as part of the overall government initiative to protect the mountain’s environment and promote its cultural monuments. “The first two hiking and cycling trails on Pentelicus are now ready to be used by our residents and visitors,” said Penteli Mayor Dimitra Kehagias. Thanking all parties involved in the project, Kehagias informed that all necessary signposting and clean-up works around the monastery are now complete. Besides the trail clean up from grass, stones or other possible obstacles for hikers, the local forest authorities approved eco-friendly signposting on rocks or wooden signs, the use of wooden stiles to level out steep parts of the paths, as well as the use of NFC-type electronic sensors which were installed to provide useful information on hikers’ mobile phones. The Penteli Municipality aims to create an integrated network of 100 kilometers of hiking trails and another network of approximately 100 kilometers of cycling trails. The study it produced for the expanded trail network has been submitted to the Greek Environment Ministry in order to be included in the Recovery and Resilience Fund to secure its future funding and growth.
