Athens and Piraeus are ready to welcome for the first time one of the world’s largest football events, the UEFA Super Cup 2023 next month.

The Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus will host the final match between Manchester City and Sevilla on August 16 at 10pm. A total of 30,400 tickets will be sold for the event.

During a press conference this week, Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis and Piraeus Mayor Yannis Moralis together with Deputy Sports Minister Yiannis Economou underlined the importance of the event for both cities and the country.

“The event confirms that the progress made and the upgraded standing of Greece is also reflected in sports with multiple benefits across sectors,” said Economou, adding that the country is aiming to host more international sporting events in the future.

“Our cities are ready to organize a brilliant final, demonstrating once again that Greece can stand with absolute success in the European sports scene,” said Bakoyannis, adding that thousands of sports fans visiting Athens and Piraeus will also have the chance to experience Greek hospitality and culture.

Bakoyannis went on to add that the municipality hopes to host significant sporting events in the new Panathinaikos Stadium in Votanikos to be completed in 2026.

On his part, Moralis added that Piraeus’ Karaiskakis Stadium is expected to be at full capacity and “televised coverage of the event worldwide is a great opportunity to promote the city internationally and drive tourism to Piraeus while boosting the local economy.

Moralis added that on August 14-15, events and celebrations will take place in the center of Piraeus, at the Municipal Theater and on Korai Square.

Tickets for the Athens-Piraeus UEFA Super Cup 2023 are available on UEFA’s website.

Initially, the UEFA Super Cup 2023 was scheduled to be hosted at the Ak Bars Arena in Kazan, Russia. Following the Russia-Ukraine war, the UEFA Executive Committee stripped Kazan of hosting rights and relocated the match to the Karaiskakis Stadium in Piraeus, Greece.
