Greek Labor and Social Affairs Minister Adonis Georgiadis announced this week a set of measures to support employees who work at enterprises affected by recent fires.

According to an amendment to a finance ministry bill tabled over the weekend, workers at businesses affected by the fires on Rhodes as well as in other areas countrywide will be eligible for a 534-euro subsidy.

Additionally, employers impacted by the fires will be able to suspend employee contracts for a period of three months (furlough scheme).

“Businesses that have been affected by fires and are unable to operate, will be able to place their employees on furlough for up to three months. The employees will receive 534 euros per month in an emergency allowance from the state,” he said. The support measure was first introduced during Covid-19 lockdowns.

Rhodes, which is highly dependent on tourism has suffered a massive blow. Major tour operators TUI and Jet2 have cancelled flights to the island, where approximately 19,000 people were evacuated over the weekend as fires continue to burn.

Georgiadis pledged to support the islanders in “every way possible”. “Everything that was destroyed will be rebuilt. My family and I have already booked a holiday on Rhodes and we will support the island,” he said.

Last week, Greek authorities announced a set of 13 measures as part of efforts to support fire-hit households, businesses, and agricultural enterprises.
