More specifically, according to ELSTAT’s latest survey, 4.8 million Greeks of all ages made at least on trip last year – a 10.9 percent rise over 2021 – spending a total of 79.5 million nights, up by 14.1 percent. Travel-related spending increased to 3,328.6 million euros, recording an increase of 51.5 percent over 2021. Source: ELSTAT. At the same time, 4.0 million Greek residents – a 13.6 percent rise – aged 15 and over made at least one trip in 2022, boosting the number of trips to 6.9 million, up by 32.9 percent compared to 2021. Nights spent rose by 14.3 percent to 68.6 million and expenditure to 3,096.2 million euros up by 53.5 percent against 2021. Top reasons for travel cited by 96.0 percent of Greeks polled were leisure, recreation and holidays, visiting friends and relatives, and personal reasons. Business trips were cited by 4.0 percent of those surveyed. Compared to 2021 data, the number of people who made at least one trip rose by 13.3 percent, the number of trips was up by 31.7 percent, the number of nights increased by 13.9 percent and spending was up by of 52.2 percent. Source: ELSTAT. In 2022, trips lasting for four to seven nights increased by 39.5 percent and number of nights spent by 39.2 percent over a year earlier. The majority of Greeks traveled on land (4.4 million trips) and by sea (1.3 million trips). Compared to 2021 data, the number of trips made on land using cars, buses, and trains increased by 18.7 percent. Lastly, more than half of those polled (56.2 percent) stayed mainly at their own holiday homes or chose accommodation provided without charge by relatives and friends (74.1 percent).
