Greece in Top 10 Best Countries for Wine Lovers to Visit

Greece has ranked among the top 10 best countries for wine lovers, according to the Wine Lover’s Index 2023 released recently by luggage storage & package acceptance company, Bounce.

To compile the list the company ranked each country based on the following factors: Wine consumption, wine production, vineyard surface area, wine tours and tastings and average cost of a bottle of wine.

Then it assigned a normalized score out of ten for each factor, before taking an average of these scores.

Greece ranked 9th on the list with an average score of 5.32/10 with an average cost of a bottle of wine at 7.54 US dollars.

Portugal topped the list, with 58 liters of wine consumed per person, 25.5 wine tours & tastings per million people, and 2.09 percent of the country covered by vineyards.

“Though it may not be the first country that springs to mind when considering wine tourism,”  as Bounce notes, Moldova managed to place second with its rich winemaking history that goes back over 5,000 years.

Third on the list was Italy with the largest wine production in the ranking, 84 liters of wine produced per person, and a 2.38 percent vineyard coverage. Spain and Georgia rounded up the top 5.

Greece last year entered the list of the Top 20 of the world’s best wine destinations to visit, released by the Australian branch of the Compare the Market company. Also, theGreek wine industrywon 3 spots on the World’s Best Vineyards 2022 list drawn up annually by UK publishing company, William Reed, solidifying Greece’s international recognition as a wine tourism destination.
