Lighthouses Across Greece to Open for All on August 20

Twenty-nine lighthouses in Greece will be open to the public on Sunday, August 20, on the occasion of International Lighthouse Day, the Hellenic Navy recently announced.

Part of the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW), the International Lighthouse Day is an annual event that aims to promote public awareness of the role of lighthouses and their need for preservation and restoration.

Visitors to the Greek lighthouses will have the opportunity to learn all about their contribution to the country’s maritime safety, the significant role of lighthouse keepers and the importance of preserving their cultural heritage.

The lighthouses in the following 29 Greek destinations will be open to the public from 10am to 2pm and from 5pm to 8pm:

  1. Agios Nikolaos – Kea
  2. Akrotiri – Thira
  3. Arkitsa – Fthiotida
  4. Moudari – Kythera
  5. Vrysaki – Lavrio
  6. Gerogombos – Kefalonia
  7. Gourouni – Skopelos
  8. Drepano – Chania
  9. Kassandra – Chalkidiki
  10. Kastri -Othonoi
  11. Skinari – Zakynthos
  12. Kranai – Gythio
  13. Megalo Emvolo – Thessaloniki
  14. Melangavi – Loutraki
  15. Plaka – Lemnos
  16. Korakas – Paros
  17. Kokkinopoulo – Psara
  18. Alexandroupoli – Alexandroupoli
  19. Tainaron – Laconia
  20. Koprena – Arta
  21. Kaki Kefali – Chalkida
  22. Monemvasia – Laconia
  23. Lakkas – Paxos
  24. Vasilina – Evia
  25. Papas – Ikaria
  26. Spathi- Serifos
  27. Doukato – Lefkada
  28. Katakolo – Ilia
  29. Koghi – Salamina

The International Lighthouse Day launched in 1993 in Scotland and is held on the third full weekend of August every year. The day is celebrated by over 500 lighthouses around the world.
