Twenty-nine lighthouses in Greece will be open to the public on Sunday, August 20, on the occasion of International Lighthouse Day, the Hellenic Navy recently announced. Part of the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW), the International Lighthouse Day is an annual event that aims to promote public awareness of the role of lighthouses and their need for preservation and restoration. Visitors to the Greek lighthouses will have the opportunity to learn all about their contribution to the country’s maritime safety, the significant role of lighthouse keepers and the importance of preserving their cultural heritage. The lighthouses in the following 29 Greek destinations will be open to the public from 10am to 2pm and from 5pm to 8pm: Agios Nikolaos – Kea Akrotiri – Thira Arkitsa – Fthiotida Moudari – Kythera Vrysaki – Lavrio Gerogombos – Kefalonia Gourouni – Skopelos Drepano – Chania Kassandra – Chalkidiki Kastri -Othonoi Skinari – Zakynthos Kranai – Gythio Megalo Emvolo – Thessaloniki Melangavi – Loutraki Plaka – Lemnos Korakas – Paros Kokkinopoulo – Psara Alexandroupoli – Alexandroupoli Tainaron – Laconia Koprena – Arta Kaki Kefali – Chalkida Monemvasia – Laconia Lakkas – Paxos Vasilina – Evia Papas – Ikaria Spathi- Serifos Doukato – Lefkada Katakolo – Ilia Koghi – Salamina The Melangavi Lighthouse at Loutraki. The International Lighthouse Day launched in 1993 in Scotland and is held on the third full weekend of August every year. The day is celebrated by over 500 lighthouses around the world.
