Santorini was recently named one of the top 5 best sunset destinations in the world, according to a survey published by luggage storage & package acceptance company, Bounce. To compile the list, Bounce’s team of researchers began by collating a long list of the best destinations for sunsets, using articles from Tui, Time Out, and Forbes. Then, using Instagram, the name of the destination followed by “sunset” and “sunrise” was searched to find the total number of posts, as for example #santorinisunset. The Light Pollution Map was also used to collect the artificial light pollution in every destination. Source: Bounce. Finally scores for each of the factors above were normalized against each other to create a ranking out of 10 for each sunset destination. Santorini ranked as the 4th best sunset destination in the world with an average score of 8.56/10 and also won the coveted title of the most recommended sunset destination in the world. The island also ranked second behind Bali, Indonesia as the most Instagrammed sunset destination in the world. On the other hand, Santorini also ranked as the destination with the highest light pollution on the top five (228 μcd/m2). Source: Bounce. Uluru, Australia topped the list as the best sunset destination in the world, followed by Maldives and Haleakalā, Hawaii. Angkor Wat, Cambodia followed Santorini, rounding up the top 5. The Galápagos Islands at Ecuador are the the least light-polluted sunset destinations in the world, according to the research.
