Extending the tourism season and rebranding are among the top priorities set by Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) President Angela Gerekou for the island of Corfu.

“The next day for tourism is today, it is now and what is needed is a redefinition of the Corfu brand,” said Gerekou, during her recent meeting with island stakeholders and officials.

Gerekou, who was born on Corfu, presented a series of GNTO actions aimed at increasing tourist flows to the island and enhancing the tourism product. Among others, she said the GNTO was moving forward with sustainability initiatives aimed at extending the tourism season on Corfu as well as actions that will establish the island as a year-round city break destination ideal for event, gastronomy and marine tourism.

Gerekou went on to underline the importance of tapping into silver tourism and attracting digital nomads and also referred to efforts being made to establish Corfu as “the island of music and the arts”, which includes among others, the creation of the Ionian Film Office, to promote Corfu as a filming location.

Lastly, Gerekou refereed to the significance of getting the country’s waterway network up and running. The GNTO president said seaplane flights would contribute greatly to the connectivity of the Ionian island region. The seaplane port on Corfu is among the first to have received approval.

Meanwhile, the island’s airport, Corfu International Airport, has been ranked as one of Europe’s least stressful airports.

Earlier this year Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis presented a plan which includes 260 projects, many related to tourism, for the Ionian islands.

They makes these type of statements every year. There is nothing that needs to change except hot water and heating in the tourist residences!

Tourists visit Corfu all year round if there were suitable hotels and direct flights!
