Athens Among Cities with Best Value Museums in Europe, Says Study

Athens’ Acropolis Museum has made it to the list of Europe’s Top 10 Best Value Museums, making the Greek capital one of the most affordable European cities when it comes to tourist expenses on culture.

The finding was part of a recent survey conducted and published by the Knowledge Academy, one of the world’s largest and most established providers of training courses globally.

To compile the Best Value European Museums list, experts at the company took Tripadvisor’s list of the top 20 museums in Europe and created a weighted average rating for all museums based on the number of reviews and ratings taken from each museum’s page on the platform.

They then identified relevant Instagram hashtags for each museum on the list, such as #louvreparis and #museedulouvre. The admission fees and opening hours of the museums were also considered before all of the data was ranked and added together to get an overall “point score” out of a possible 100 points.

According to the research, the Acropolis Museum in Athens ranked 7th on the list with a score of 56.5 out of 100, tying with Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg and the Vatican Museums in Vatican City.

The museum had a total of 76,000 hashtags. The company’s researchers noted that the museum’s location allows visitors to “connect artefacts with their original context through its proximity to the ancient citadel of the Acropolis and its architectural design that complements the antiquities it houses.”

London’s National Gallery topped the list with a score of 63 out of 100, followed by the British capital’s Natural History Museum (61 out of 100) and Paris’ Louvre (60.5 out of 100).

The Acropolis Museum also ranked 7th as one of the most affordable museums in Europe and 5th as one of Europe’s best value hidden gems.

The Louvre Museum in Paris was named the most Instagrammable museum in Europe with 5.7 million hashtags.
