Naoussa Municipality to Spend €1.6 Million to Upgrade Historic Park

The Municipality of Naoussa, Northern Greece, recently announced plans to upgrade its historic park with a 1.6 million euro project. The project aims to restore and enhance the park’s natural, cultural, and historical features, making it a more attractive and accessible space for residents and visitors alike.

The park, which was last renovated in 1959, is a popular spot for recreation and relaxation. It is also home to a number of historical and cultural monuments, including the Monument of Sacrifice, which commemorates the massacre of locals by the Turks in 1822.

Since 2021, it has been officially included in the European Route of Historic Gardens of the Council of Europe, becoming the first park in Greece to achieve this distinction.

This distinction allows the Naoussa Municipality to connect with the most important parks in Europe, exchanging good practices and know-how while ensuring the park’s sustainable development.

Furthermore, as Naoussa Mayor Nikolas Karanikolas highlights, being part of the network can “create opportunities for high-level tourism, offer more funding opportunities and protect the park’s heritage and identity.”

The park’s upgrade project will include a number of interventions, including:

• Structural reconstruction of the park’s walkways, bridges, and other architectural elements
• Installation of new irrigation and water supply networks
• Planting of new trees and vegetation
• Installation of new lighting, seating, and other amenities

A tender for the project is expected to be launched in the next few months.

Naoussa is a town sitting at the foot of Mount Vermio.

While its west skyline described by lush mountains and hills, its east is interrupted by a sharp degradation of the ground, which creates a natural  “balcony” look. A large part of this “balcony” is occupied by the town’s municipal park covering an area of 30 acres.

The park boasts plane trees over 600 years old and houses an open-air theater fully integrated in the natural environment, a cafeteria and restaurant at the “Casino” building and the municipal green service building which has been reconstructed with eco-friendly materials.
