Jan-July Occupancy Levels at Athens – Attica Hotels up by 19.2%

Occupancy levels at hotels in Athens and the wider Attica region reached 75.4 percent in the first seven months of the year but were still down by 2.1 percent over pre-Covid 2019.

According to the latest data released by the Athens-Attica & Argosaronic Hotel Association (EXAAA) in cooperation with GBR Consulting, average occupancy in the January-July period increased by 19.2 percent compared to the same period a year ago.

In the seven-month period, average daily rate (ADR) came to 136.01 euros, up by 15.4 percent over the same period a year ago and by 28.6 percent compared to 2019.

Despite an upward trend inJune, average occupancy, ADR and revenue per available room (RevPAR) at Athens hotels dropped in July.

More specifically, average occupancy of Athens hotels in July 2023 fell to 89.4 percent from 93.2 percent in June, marking a 0.2 percent rise compared to July 2022 but down by 0.5 percent over 2019.

In the same month, ADR drooped to 165.94 euros from 175.83 euros in June. Compared to July 2022, the average daily room rate was up by 14.7 percent and by 37.1 percent compared to July 2019. RevPAR came to 148.30 euros down from 163.79 euros in June.

The best-performing months so far in terms of room rates, according to EXAAA, were May, with average room prices at 154.66 euros, and June at 175.92 euros.

However, Athens continues to be among the three cities with the lowest hotel room rates in the seven-month period compared to rival cities including Istanbul, were ADR is up by 69.3 percent over 2019 to 145.89 euros; Barcelona (+22.0 percent over 2019 at 174.73 euros); Rome (+54.1 percent over 2019 at 231.30 euros); and Paris, where average price per room is 336.82 euros, 55.9 percent higher than in 2019.

The lowest rates were found in Athens at 136.01 euros, Vienna (126.04 euros), and Berlin (118.60 euros).
