Moreover, during the first eight months of the year, which also includes Greek tourism’s peak season (July-August), passenger traffic at AIA amounted to 18.67 million from 14.67 million in 2022 and higher than the respective 2019 levels by 8 percent. According to data released by AIA, during January-August international passengers reached some 12.8 million surpassing the levels of 2022 with a strong increase of 30.3% and a corresponding rise of 6.9% compared to pre-pandemic figures. During the same period, AIA welcomed 5.87 million domestic passengers, recording an increase of 10.6 percent compared to 2019 and 21.2 percent compared to last year. August August was a strong month for Greece’s largest airport as 2019 figures were surpassed by 8.4 percent, reaching 3,295,440 million passengers, slightly lower than July (3,296,955). Passenger traffic in August also showed a strong performance compared to last year, with a 15.5 percent increase. In more detail, both domestic and international passenger traffic at Athens airport during August exceeded 2022 levels by 12.2% and 17% respectively. Accordingly, compared to 2019, domestic passengers registered an increase of 11.6% and international travelers showed an increase of 7%. On a monthly basis, domestic passenger traffic was slightly down compared to July, with 1.02 million travelers traveling through AIA in August compared to 1.029 million the month before. In terms of international traffic, the number of travelers at the Greek capital’s airport followed an upward trend, reaching 2.27 million in August from 2.26 million the previous month. Flights Athens International Airport’s number of flights during the first eight months of 2023 amounted to 161,520, i.e. 13.3 percent above the 2022 levels and 4.7 percent above the respective 2019 levels. Both domestic and international flights were above the 2022 volumes by 8 percent and 17.9 percent, while versus the 2019 levels, the observed growth was at the level of 8.8 percent and 1.7 percent, respectively.
