The Heraklion Municipality on Crete and the city of Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt recently signed a Memorandum of Collaboration (MoC) that includes plans to establish an air connection between the two cities. The air connection is expected to boost tourism to both cities and further promote cultural and economic cooperation between Greece and Egypt. In his speech at the signing ceremony, Heraklion Mayor Vassilis Lambrinos said that Crete and Egypt have been “inextricably linked for thousands of years.” He noted that Egyptian objects had been found in Minoan tombs, and vases from ancient Crete had been found in excavations in Egypt. “Heraklion and Sharm El Sheikh are officially sister cities that can now look together towards the future with optimism,” the mayor added. Heraklion is the biggest city on Crete and is already connected to cities like Tampa, US, Toledo, Spain and Limassol, Cyprus through “sister-cities” programs. Sharm El Sheikh is the administrative hub of Egypt’s South Sinai Governorate and is considered a significant tourism center, boasting many holiday resorts while also attracting many international conferences and diplomatic meetings.
