The new municipal Lykavittos theater, set to reopen after 15 years, was recently presented by Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis through a timelapse video. According to the mayor, the new theater has been completely renovated and upgraded to meet European standards. The theater’s iconic skeleton form has been reinforced and renovated to preserve its original appearance, while the 3,850 plastic seats have been replaced with wooden benches that seat 3,950 people. The theater will now be able to host events with 6,000 spectators (seated and standing). Furthermore, the theater now has a new fire detection system as well as a fibre optic network and new wiring for lighting, sound, data and security systems based on modern requirements. Speaking from inside the iconic theater, Bakoyannis said its reopening is a “great day for Athens“, adding that it is a “symbol and a monument” of the city now “ready to welcome audiences from all over the world”. The video dedicated to the reopening of the Lykavittos theater was filmed in timelapse showing its transformation into a modern and vibrant cultural space. It also stands as a short visual testament to its landmark status and importance, designed in 1965 by pioneering architect Takis Zenetos. Photo source: Athens Municipality. Following the municipality’s plan for the overall protection and regeneration of Lycabettus Hill during the days and hours when performances are scheduled at its theater, access by car to the hill’s car park will only be allowed to people with disabilities or over 60 years old, and for taxi pick-up and drop-off. The theater’s reopening will be marked with a concert by leading Greek composer Stavros Xarchakos on Friday, September 15. The concert’s proceeds will be donated to those affected by the devastating floods in Thessaly. The municipality will provide free transport for visitors with a shuttle bus from Sarantapichou Street to and from the theatre from 19:00 to 21:30. The shuttle bus will also be available after the concert to assist those who wish to use it, with priority given to those in need of assistance.
