Piraeus Invites All to 2nd Taste Festival for ‘Seafood and More’

On the occasion of World Tourism Day the Municipality of Piraeus is hosting its second seafood festival and a number of parallel events during September 22-24.

Dedicated to sustainable cuisine, the 2nd Piraeus Taste Festival: Seafood and More is inspired by the Zero Food Waste philosophy.

“This festival is a celebration that focuses on the gastronomic richness and delicious flavors that only Piraeus can offer,” said Piraeus Mayor Yiannis Moralis, adding that the event could attract even more visitors to the city.

The festival will include parallel events at Mikrolimano, Alexandras Square, Pasalimani, Kanari Square, Korai Square and the center of Piraeus.

The 2nd Piraeus Taste Festival: Seafood and More will kick off with the “Tastes of Piraeus” event on Friday, September 22, at Mikrolimano, where award-winning chefs will present delicious creations inspired by the Piraeus sea and introduce us to the secrets of fish and wine tasting.

Cooking demonstrations will continue throughout the weekend with renowned chefs, pastry chefs, and sommeliers proposing their own flavors and creations.

On the same day, the “Piraeus Taste Fair” will open for the public at Pasalimani, featuring dozens of exhibitors presenting the new trends of Greek gastronomy, premium and special products of the Greek land, and gourmet proposals from small producers. The fair will run until Sunday, October 1.

Alexandras Square in Piraeus will host the “Cinema at Your Plate” event during September 23-24 where a live cooking show and tasting will be accompanied by film screenings at the open-air cinema created on the square.

On Saturday, September 23, the square will also host the “Tastes of the World” event, with culinary creations, unique exotic flavors and cultural activities, organized by the cultural departments of the embassies of China, Panama, Peru, Argentina and the Dominican Republic as well as the ethnic restaurants of the city of Piraeus.

Saturday will also mark the return of the Bream Celebration at the Aphrodite Bay of Piraeus with sea culinary aromas and a grand Greek island folk music festival.

On Sunday, September 24, children will be in the spotlight at Alexandras Square with the “Kids Corner” event, where young cooks and young chefs will play, have fun, learn about the flavors of the area, and make their own creations under the guidance of the Kids Cooking Club.

During the same day, Piraeus’ Korai Square will host the “Raki Festival” where visitors will have the opportunity to see the traditional rakokazana, taste raki, and sample Cretan delicacies while at the city’s Kanari Square a unique stand-up comedy show called “Cooking Maliatsis” with local comedian Kostas Maliatsis is also scheduled.

In collaboration with the Piraeus Commerce Association and on the occasion of World Trade Day, on Friday, September 22, the city’s shops will be open until late in the evening for a celebration of delicacies, tastes and music events and a midday feast at the traditional market.

At the same time, the city’s cafes and restaurants will be taking part in the gastronomic fiesta with special menus during the festival, promoting their dishes and drinks.

As part of the eco-friendly nature of the festival, all serving products will be biodegradable and disposable, and all activities will be structured according to the principles of circular and sustainable social economy.

Finally, during the three day event there will be cycling tours around Piraeus neighborhoods. The bike tours will be free, with the use of electric bikes on a first-come, first-served basis.

The event is supported by the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) and the Region of Attica.
