Traveler flows to Greece in the first seven months of the year increased by 21.9 percent to 16,170.4 thousand from 13,260.6 thousand in the same period a year ago, generating a total of 10.321.1 million euros, according to provisional data released on Thursday by the Bank of Greece.

Travelers from the US led the way marking a 43.5 percent rise in arrivals to 737.4 thousand from January to July. Other major source markets for Greece were Germany, France, and the UK up by 11.4 percent, 12.4 percent, and 3.2 percent, respectively, over the same months a year ago.

Traveler arrivals via road soared in the period under review marking a 45.0 percent rise while flows through Greek airports rose by 15.5 percent.

The number of arrivals from the EU rose by 20.5 percent year-on-year to 9,719.9 thousand, while non-EU arrivals rose by 24.1 percent to 6,450.5 thousand.

In July, Greece welcomed 6,108.6 thousand inbound travelers up by 15.8 percent who boosted tourist receipts by 15.1 percent. Airport arrivals were up by 9.0 percent over 2022 and flows through road border-crossing points up by 36.2 percent.

BoG analysts attribute the strong performance for the month to an 18.7 percent increase in arrivals from the EU and an 11.0 percent rise in traffic from non-EU countries.

Top source markets in July were Germany with arrivals up by 16.1 percent to 746.4 thousand, France (+0.5 percent to 372.5 thousand), the US (+10.6 percent to 209.1 thousand), and Russia (+58.1 percent to 6.3 thousand). The number of travelers from the UK dropped by 1.4 percent.

Cut out the room tax then and get prices down, we have been going to Crete for 23 years but it’s becoming harder to justify spending nearly £4800 on a self catering holiday.
