As part of ongoing plans to redevelop the inner-city neighborhood of Akadimia Platonos (Plato’s Academy) and to create a park, the Municipality of Athens announced this week that it had refurbished a playground.

The newly revamped playground which is now accessible to children with disabilities is the first step of the ambitious project, which includes actions that will also highlight the archaeological area of Plato’s Academy.

The play area, which includes recreational and sports facilities, protective surfaces, safety-tested materials and hardware, modern play equipment and fencing, is located in the heart of the Plato Academy park and very close to the new Athens Archaeological Museum.

The museum is part of the wider regeneration program that includes improving accessibility and creating a continuous path that will connect the ancient site with a modern city walk and the park.

Renovation works and a study on the Plato Academy park were funded by the A.G. Leventis Foundation as part of the municipality’s “Adopt Your City” program.

“The new playground at the Plato Academy brings us even closer to our goal of creating a modern and safe playground within 10 minutes of every home,” said Athens Mayor Kostas Bakoyannis, adding that it was one of a series of initiatives aimed breathing new life into the area, while highlighting its unique historical and cultural wealth.
