Mykonos, Greece’s renowned party island, is also home to a wealth of historical, cultural, and natural attractions that visitors can explore, according to a recent Euronews article titled “Horse trekking and cooking classes: Why Mykonos is so much more than a party island.

The article highlights the island’s unique character and experiences that tourists can enjoy, particularly during the autumn months when the crowds have thinned and the weather is still mild. It also emphasizes the importance of sustainable tourism and encourages visitors to seek out authentic and lesser-known experiences.

While Mykonos’ coastline is undoubtedly a major draw, the island has much more to offer than just sunbathing and swimming. According to Euronews Travel’s editor Rebecca Ann Hughes the island’s visitors can also visit the archaeological site of Delos (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), which is the “archaeological attraction that ironically brought the island tourism fame in the first place.”

Hughes goes on to mention that the island is also home to picturesque villages like Ano Mera that have remained untouched by overtourism while the island’s mainland offers a wealth of experiences like horse trekking or visiting religious sites like the 16th-century monastery Panagia Tourliani, praised for its architecture and artefacts.

Culinary delights with fresh ingredients

Mykonos is considered a foodie’s paradise, with a diverse culinary scene that showcases the island’s fresh, local produce. During her trip Hughes also visited the Rizes farmstead, where she took cooking classes using ingredients from the company’s abundant vegetable plot.

She hailed the experience as a trip back in time with “no overpriced cocktail or DJ booth in sight.”

The Euronews article also highlighted the growing movement towards sustainable tourism on Mykonos. Many locals and hospitality businesses on the island are working to reduce their environmental impact and promote responsible tourism practices.

The recognition that Mykonos is more than just a party island comes ahead of the World Travel Market (WTM) event in London, where the island’s authorities will participate.
