Photo source: AIA. Athens International Airport (AIA) recorded another important milestone in October, according to recently released data. Passenger traffic at the Greek capital’s airport last month amounted to 2.74 million, i.e. 19.5 percent above October 2022, but also 18.9 percent higher than the pre-COVID October 2019. Domestic and international passengers surpassed the 2022 levels by 16.6 percent and 20.8 percent and the 2019 levels by 22 percent and 17.7 percent, respectively. Overall, during the first ten months of 2023, the airport’s passenger traffic totalled 24.42 million, above the 2022 levels by 24.9 percent and higher than the respective 2019 levels by 9.6 percent. Analytically, domestic and international passengers surpassed the 2022 levels by 19.9 percent and 27.4 percent, while also exceeding the 2019 levels by 12.4 percent and 8.4 percent, respectively. The airport’s number of flights during the January-October period amounted to 208,834, i.e. 13.2 percent above the 2022 levels and 6.2 percent above the respective 2019 levels. Both domestic and international flights were above the 2022 volumes by 7.9 percent and 17.7 percent, while versus the 2019 levels, the observed growth was at the level of 9.8 percent and 3.6 percent, respectively. Earlier this month, the Airports Council International Europe (ACI Europe) released data that showed Athens Airport among Europe’s best performing in its category in the third quarter (Q3) of the year, exceeding Q3 pre-Covid 2019 figures driven by strong international demand.
