The Makedonia Palace Hotel in Thessaloniki has donated 30,000 euros to the Hellenic Red Cross for the support of the flood victims in Thessaly.

The amount was collected through a special support program the hotel launched two months ago that saw a portion of the room rate of each overnight stay being put aside as humanitarian aid.

“The amount we collected, with the contribution of our guests, will be allocated through the Red Cross for the relief and assistance of the afflicted of Thessaly,” Makedonia Palace General Manager Alkiviadis Sotiriou said.

“The management and people of the hotel are proud and excited to announce this extraordinary achievement,” he added.

Sotiris Kyvelos, the president of the Regional Council of the Thessaloniki branch of the Red Cross thanked Makedonia Palace Hotel for the “highest spirit of awareness” by contributing to the effort to support Thessaly’s flood victims.

“I hope that this high spirit of solidarity will be an example for even more of our fellow citizens in the future,” Kyvelos said.

Flooding in September caused major devastation in the region of Thessaly, ravaging the domestic primary sector and leaving roads and houses under water. Dubbed “Storm Daniel” it was Greece’s worst flooding on record and saw 16 people losing their lives.
